Home Sweeet Home or Construction Zone? | Special Edition ...

When my family moved into our home back in 1997, the old place was only a few years shy of celebrating her centennial birthday. And the furnace was almost twenty years old. So every night, from Halloween through Easter (or even beyond considering I live in New England), I would add a small endnote to my nightly prayers asking that the clunks, clangs?and hisses from the cast iron radiators would fill the night air as the furnace chugged away through another winter.

My prayers were always answered and now we are finally able to do a major home improvement?project that includes (1) a new hot water heater (one the size of a briefcase that hangs on the basement wall instead of that 40 gallon monster that sits right in the middle of the basement), (2) central air conditioning (yeah! no more window units!) and (3) a new furnace (gas this time!) that will be up in the attic giving us even more space downstairs once that old furnace and the above ground oil tank are removed.

Heaven, sheer heaven! (That?s a picture of our current furnace who has served faithfully all these years!)

But first I have to make it through the next week and a half of living in a construction zone. First comes the installation of all the new equipment and then the removal of the old including the radiators from every room in the house. The contractor says this is all going to be done in seven business days, but I?ve added another week mentally because my house is old and nothing ever goes as planned. Which means I will have to deal with?a dog that?s not too crazy about strangers in her house (it was bad enough when the new front porch was added last summer and the crew was outside all the time!) and oh, and did I mention I have a self-imposed deadline for?the first draft of my latest ?Welcome to Destiny? book (Devlin Murphy?s story!)?for the end of the month?

So, does anyone have any stories of home improvement projects or any helpful tips or tricks for getting through the next couple of weeks?
