Kenya has been stripped of the hosting rights of this year's East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup due to its poor disorganization and Uganda awarded to stage the event instead, officials said.
Kenya was appointed to host the regional competition at the last CECAFA congress meeting in Dar es Salaam last December, but general secretary Nicholas Musonye said they have had to reverse that decision after the tournament sponsors, East African Breweries Limited (EABL) asked to move it to Kampala.
"The sponsors raised their concern over the organizational abilities of the Football Kenyan Federation, which has been accused of being so divisive. The sponsor has the final obligation to make their decision where they would want the tournament to be held. It's Uganda and that is their stand," said Musonye, who returned from the country on Friday.
"The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has already named a 10-member committee to organise the event which will be played at Kampala's Namboole national stadium between November 27 to December 12. We have received entry confirmations from all the CECAFA teams and there is a possibility of having several guest sides from the Southern Africa as well," Musonye added.
But Kenya and South Sudan, which is set to step into the regional competition for the first time have criticised CECAFA for switching the tournament venue.
"We, as a new member of the regional body were informed initially that Kenya were the hosts. We shall lobby other member countries of CECAFA to ensure decisions made at the Congress were respected," Ghabur Goc Alei, the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) president said in Nairobi.
Apart of being hosts, Uganda is the most successful of the 12 members of CECAFA, having won the Senior Challenge Cup 12 times.
