BERLIN (AP) ? The German government says Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Premier Mario Monti have agreed they will do everything to protect the eurozone, and Monti will visit Berlin next month.
Government spokesman Georg Streiter said Merkel spoke by phone with Monti Saturday.
That conversation came after Merkel spoke with French President Francois Hollande Friday. The German and French leaders issued a joint statement saying they were determined to do everything to protect the eurozone.
Neither statement mentioned any specific action. Italy and Spain, the eurozone's third- and fourth-biggest economies, are struggling with high borrowing costs.
Streiter says Merkel invited Monti to visit Berlin in the second half of August and he accepted the invitation.
