Real Estate Marketing Ideas For Realtors ?LinkedIn Social Media ...

Learn The Secret That Few Realtors Are Using To Increase Leads, Sales & Website Traffic

Real Estate Marketing IdeasEffective real estate marketing ideas are getting harder to come by. As the internet has evolved into the #1 source of income for most realtors, online competition has stiffened significantly. Although SEO or search engine optimization is still an effective internet marketing tactic, it is expensive and constantly changing.

Google is constantly updating their search engine. What worked a month ago may not work at all anymore or even a month from now. SEO is becoming more challenging and expensive, with fees ranging from $1000-$2000 per month and no guarantee that it will even work.

Social media marketing is equally important and can be incredibly powerful and inexpensive. However, many realtors and real estate agencies are discovering that their social media marketing efforts are not providing much if any return on investment.

This has caused many to write off social media marketing as not being effective and it simply can?t be farther from the truth. In most cases, they are simply using the wrong techniques on the wrong social media sites.

Why most realtors and real estate agencies are failing at social media marketing?

Because most of them, as well as most other business professionals are focusing heavily on Facebook and Twitter. The vast majority of users on these sites are there for personal reasons, to connect with family and friends. The last thing on their mind is conducting business. In fact, most businesses that run paid ads on Facebook report a very dismal response.

Although it is advisable to keep your past customers engaged with Facebook and Twitter, it is often a very poor source of new business. So what social media site is the most effective for conducting business and getting more traffic, leads and sales?

Realtor Marketing Social MediaLinked In is the largest social media site for business professionals looking to do more business. Linked In also boasts the highest average household income per member over all other social media sites, with an average of $109,000. It is the most effective source for creating profitable business relationships if you know how to properly use it.

Linked Influence is a social media training program that teaches realtors and other business professionals how to use Linked In to establish yourself as an expert realtor in your area, attract high quality clients, drive targeted traffic to your website and dominate your market.

Lewis Howes is the creator and is considered the #1 expert on LinkedIn for business professionals. He has written two books on the topic of LinkedIn, given over 250 live speeches on online seminars to over 25,000 people around the world, and has consulted with some of the largest companies in the world showing them how to leverage getting more business out of LinkedIn.

The program comes with a 30 day money back guarantee and proceeds support a children?s education charity called Pencils Of Promise.

Where are the Happy Homosexuals?

Hong Kong's attitude towards homosexuality hasn't developed as fast as its infrastructure. Photo by bernard_in_va via Flickr.

Hong Kong?s attitude towards homosexuality hasn?t developed as fast as its infrastructure. Photo by bernard_in_va via Flickr.

In the nineteen years I have lived in Hong Kong, every gay character I have seen on local television has been at least one of the following: (a) evil (b) a corpse (and not the fun, reanimated kind) (c)rebuffed by their object of affection, who turns out to be straight d)?the stereotypically gay male, more caricature than character, whose effeminate mannerisms are exaggerated for comic effect.

The lack of positive visibility on local television is hardly surprising in this socially conservative city, where laws against discrimination on grounds of sexuality do not exist in the private sector and have been missing from the legislative agenda since the early 1990s. As the Hong Kong public tends to be rather vocal about what it wants, public opinion does have an effect on the activities of the Legislative Council. The lack of anti-discrimination legislation, then, is telling of the general attitude towards homosexuality in Hong Kong.

The sexuality of gay characters is almost invariably introduced as a plot-twist.? In crime procedurals, the twist may be that the victim-of-the-week, the macho gangster, was killed by his jilted, male lover (see: Armed Reaction).? In the prime-time dramas that revolve around some banal premise or other, the producers might flirt with controversy by having a character declare his or her love for another character of ? gasp! ? the same sex; before the audience can come to terms with the prospect of a same-sex relationship appearing on their screens, however, the recipient of the declaration quickly rebuffs the homosexual?s advances.? To further preserve the status quo, the rejector enters into a heterosexual relationship if he or she is not already in one (see: Let it be Love); the rejected may fly off to a different country, never to be seen again (see: Pages of Treasures).? (A quick caveat: when the characters involved are both female, expect the rejecting and fleeing to happen only after they have kissed.)

The way the local media treats openly gay celebrities is hardly more reassuring.? Anthony Wong, a local singer, raised eyebrows earlier this year when he came out onstage at the end of a concert.? Any hopes of Wong?s coming-out story sending a message about the normalcy of homosexuality were dashed when a local magazine, Ming Pao Weekly, published an interview with him.? Their cover featured a photo of Wong staring listlessly into the distance, accompanied by the caption: ?The Complications of Coming Out: Anthony Wong Fears Dragging Others Down with Him?.

That said, our local gossip rags have shown on occasion that they do possess the capacity not to run headlines solely at the expense of celebrities rumoured to be gay.? This seemed to be the case last month when an actor, Wilfred Lau, announced to the press that he was dating actress/singer Joey Yung, and a series of dramatic events unfolded: another celebrity, Denise Ho (who, at various points in time, had been rumoured to have been dating one or the other) unfollowed Lau on Weibo (a Chinese internet service similar to Twitter), wrote a post about betrayal, and flew off to Taiwan, allegedly to deal with the heartbreak.? The media has been surprisingly blas? about the homosexual aspect of all this, and has treated the Ho/Yung corner of this alleged love triangle like they would a heterosexual relationship: many news outlets have assumed that such a relationship in fact existed despite the lack of express confirmation from either party, and have bestowed upon them the traditional portmanteau relationship moniker.? Even more interestingly, the sense of schadenfreude that inevitably laces celebrity news items has been at the expense of Lau, not Ho: Lau has been accused of capitalising on Yung?s greater fame and success, and media reports of furious fans flooding his Weibo page with angry comments abound.

It is undeniable that Western culture has affected the way Hongkongers think about homosexuality: for example, the expressions ?coming out of the closet? and ?Brokeback? (from Brokeback Mountain) have been incorporated into the everyday lexicon.? However, returning to the topic of television, it would perhaps be too optimistic to expect broadcasts of programmes from more socially liberal countries to ameliorate the damage local television has wreaked on gay visibility.? To start with, the average American (or British) television show is hardly teeming with gay characters, let alone well-developed ones; as it happens, not one of the shows in this season?s local free-to-view line-ups features a recurring gay character.? Glee, widely (if sometimes undeservedly) hailed as a trailblazer in improving visibility for minorities, is not currently available on free-to-view channels; instead, it airs on Star World, a pay-to-view channel.

Even those who pay extra to watch Glee on their televisions here do not watch the same version of the show that airs in the US; instead every scene involving overt homosexual affection has been cut.? The most Blaine and Kurt, and Brittany and Santana, ever do is hold hands in the background, hug, and have deep, meaningful, semi-truncated conversations.? Two decisions not to edit scenes stand in stark, worrying contrast to this.? In one, Star World has left intact kisses between ? to name but three of the heterosexual relationships that have appeared on this show ? Finn and Rachel, Will and Emma, and Mike and Tina, clearly suggesting that it is the sexuality of the characters involved, and not the physical display of affection, that motivates the decision to censor.? For another, the scene where a gay teen attempts to commit suicide was also left unedited.

Some might argue that the systematic removal of the handful of scenes where teenagers are shown kissing other teenagers of the same sex is unproblematic; after all, Hong Kong viewers still get to know Hiram and Leroy, the delightful gay dads of Rachel Berry; we still hear Santana refer to Brittany as her girlfriend; we still see Quinn firmly defending homosexuality to the God Squad.? However, that would be completely missing the point: the very fact that the scenes depicting the simplest, clearest act of affection between homosexual couples are removed suggests that there?s something wrong with them.? Add to this the idea that it is somehow fine for viewers to see homosexual teens be bullied and outed, but not to see them kiss the ones they love, and these editing choices become indefensible.

Amid roster questions, fans to rally for PSU team

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? An early-morning rally for Penn State football players could provide the perfect opportunity for fans to try to sway star tailback Silas Redd to stay in Happy Valley.

Organizers of the community rally plan to show up outside the football building at dawn Tuesday to greet Nittany Lions for early-morning workouts. Former player Tim Sweeney said he hopes the event gives players a lift during a difficult time for the program.

NCAA sanctions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal will keep Penn State from postseason play the next four seasons. The NCAA has allowed current players to transfer and play right away, waiving the standard rule of sitting out a season.

Redd, a 1,200-yard rusher who would be a focal point of coach Bill O'Brien's reconfigured Penn State offense, visited Southern California during the weekend. Another good season could have the junior with the dazzling open-field spin move headed to the NFL draft a year early next spring.

On Monday, backup safety Tim Buckley, a former walk-on, became the first player to transfer from Penn State in the wake of the sanctions after returning to his native North Carolina to play for North Carolina State. Penn State also confirmed Monday that former starting quarterback Rob Bolden had left the team, though the demoted signal-caller was given the OK to consider other schools before the NCAA meted out its landmark punishments on July 23.

A handful of other players are at least considering a transfer, leaving the possibility open that Buckley's decision might lead to a chain reaction. Still, the majority of O'Brien's core players appear to be sticking with Penn State, determined to weather out what could be a stormy season for the program.

"What these guys have had to endure and overcome, nobody has ever been faced before in college football," said Sweeney, a businessman who hosts an online radio show. "There aren't any better representatives of our university than our football team."

Sweeney said he and his fellow host Keith Conlin, came up with the "Rise and Rally" event that has garnered community support. He said more than 1,000 people have indicated on Facebook they will attend the rally, which is scheduled to start at 6 a.m., in order to greet Nittany Lions before their morning lifts.

O'Brien said at Big Ten media days last week in Chicago that more than 50 players have re-affirmed their commitment to Penn State, though he did expect some transfers. Two Class of 2013 recruits have de-committed over the last week, but six prospects visited O'Brien during the weekend before, standing by their verbal commitments.

"We have a really unique opportunity at Penn State to do something really special," one of the six recruits, Cedar Cliff High senior Adam Breneman, said in a phone interview. Breneman, of Camp Hill, Pa., is considered one of the top tight end prospects in the country.

"We have a chance to bring a community together. We have a chance to be remembered for a long time and give a community hope."

Buckley won't be part of Breneman's future team. North Carolina State released a statement Monday announcing Buckley, from Raleigh, N.C., would join the Wolfpack for the team's first practice Tuesday. The former walk-on redshirted last season at Penn State, so he has four years of eligibility left.

"The opportunity to come here and play at my state university, so close to home, was something that I couldn't pass up," Buckley said in the statement that made no mention of the scandal.

Redd could be O'Brien's most valuable player ... if he stays. The tailback had seven rushing touchdowns last season, and averaged 95.5 yards per game on the ground as Penn State finished 9-4. Redd voiced support for former coach Joe Paterno as late as two weeks ago, after former FBI director Louis Freeh released the results of his investigation in the Sandusky scandal for the university.

Freeh said Paterno, who died in January, and three other school officials concealed allegations against Sandusky ? conclusions vehemently denied by Paterno's family and the officials.

"It has nothing to do with us," Redd had said about the findings. Penn State later handed the results of Freeh's investigation to the NCAA.

Redd had also said his opinion of Paterno, the coach that recruited him to Penn State, hadn't changed. He said Paterno, in his view, remained "the best college football coach of all time."

Since then, the NCAA instituted its four-year postseason ban on Penn State that would cover the last two years of Redd's eligibility. College sports' governing body is allowing Redd and all other Nittany Lions to transfer to another school and get on the field right away.

The only restriction is they cannot practice or play with Penn State this year and still play for another school this season, meaning the Penn State roster should finally be set once training camp starts in a week. But the process has set up a college version of NFL free agency, in which other schools have been busy trying to cherry-pick Nittany Lions.

USC appears to be the landing spot if Redd decides to leave. With an offense led by quarterback Matt Barkley, the Trojans will be highly ranked and one of the favorites to win the Pac-12 Conference. A person familiar with Redd's decision said the running back was returning from California on Monday and could make his decision as early as Tuesday. The person requested anonymity because no one was authorized to speak for Redd.

If Redd is back in State College by early Tuesday, he might find a bevy of fans urging him to stay.

Most downtown businesses are displaying "Proud to Support Penn State Football" signs on windows. Some stores have started selling shirts with the slogan "Billeave," playing off of the first name of O'Brien, the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator.

Penn State fans and students have also started a Twitter campaign to sway Redd with the hashtag "StaySilas."

"With Silas Redd, or without Silas Redd, I would not discount Coach O'Brien's ability to make an offense and put points on the board," said Sweeney, who also heads the Penn State football Lettermen's Club, a group of former players.

Members of the football alumni group also plan to speak with players at a team meeting later Tuesday. Sweeney said he hopes hundreds of lettermen attend the meeting that O'Brien asked they attend.

Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said any plans by players to transfer would come from the players themselves or his new school, not Penn State.

It's unclear if Bolden has settled on a new school. He was the starting quarterback to open the last two seasons before losing the job to Matt McGloin each year. There appears to be an interest from LSU in Bolden.

This spring, McGloin was tabbed the outright starter by O'Brien, while Bolden was demoted to the third team.

Temperature of Hong Kong is predicted to rise by two to three degrees Celsius in 30 years

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? The temperature in the inner urban areas of Hong Kong is predicted to rise by two to three Celsius degree in 30 years' time, according to the latest scientific study by researchers at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The study was done by PolyU Professor Janet Nichol and her research student Mr To Pui-hang, together with Chinese University's Professor Edward Ng Yan-yung, using remote sensing technology and satellite images. They have mapped the distribution of temperatures for both daytime and nighttime over Hong Kong at decadal intervals up to 2039, taking into consideration the temperature change due to greenhouse-induced warming as well as the impact of urbanization. The latter is known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect.

Professor Janet Nichol said the UHI effect means an urban area is significantly warmer than its rural surroundings. The temperature difference is usually larger at night and in winter. There are several causes leading to UHI. These include high-rise buildings which block thermal radiation at night, materials with thermal bulk properties such as asphalt and concrete, and the lack of vegetation in urban areas. With its densely populated urban area, Hong Kong provides a typical example of the UHI effect.

While temperature projections for the city carried out by the Hong Kong Observatory have reflected the expected temperature change due to greenhouse-induced warming, they have failed to address the direct effects of urban development. In contrast, PolyU research has examined temperature changes due to both global warming and urbanization effects independently.

"Urbanization is an additional factor in causing temperature rise, and if current trends are continued, temperatures could increase much faster in the future," said Professor Nichol.

Given no further urbanization, the annual mean temperature in Hong Kong will rise by 3.0 to 6.0 Celsius degrees by 2100 (according to a study of the Hong Kong Observatory in 2007). However, the mean temperature is predicted to rise by 3.7 to 6.8 Celsius degrees within the same period with a constant urbanization rate as before. The impact of urbanization effect or UHI magnitude is estimated at 0.08 Celsius degrees per decade.

In predicting future rise in temperature, Professor Nichol has made use of satellite images for baseline air temperature mapping, global climate models for the projection of greenhouse-induced warming, and plot ratio to reflect the degree of urbanization. She also noted that air temperature is more sensitive to the density rather than the height of buildings, though the latter cannot be fully neglected.

The study found that in 2039 most urban areas in Hong Kong would have a two to three Celsius degree increase in daytime air temperature, indicated by the original dark green areas changed to yellow. This indicates an average increase of temperature on a summer day in urban districts, from currently 35 Celsius degrees to just less than 38 Celsius degrees in 2039.

Moreover, over the next three decades night time temperatures in the centre of Kowloon are expected to show at least an increase by two Celsius degrees, reaching over 31.5 degrees at night. This means that most urban districts in the city that are currently "comfortable" at night will become "uncomfortable" by 2039. As a result, those people who cannot afford air conditioners will suffer heat stress both during the day and at night.

Professor Janet Nichol also urged city planners to take into consideration the wind speed requirements for residential buildings in urban areas so as to achieve a more favourable living environment for city dwellers. This is called "sustainable urbanization."

Poll: Gun control views unchanged after Colorado massacre

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans' views on gun control remain largely unchanged despite the killing of a dozen moviegoers in a Colorado theater this month, a Pew poll showed on Monday.

Forty-seven percent of Americans say it is more important to control gun ownership, while 46 percent say it is more important to protect the rights of Americans to own guns, the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said in a statement.

The numbers are virtually unchanged from April, when 45 percent prioritized gun control and 49 percent gun rights. Other major episodes of gun violence in recent years also had little effect on public opinion about gun laws, Pew said.

James Holmes, a former University of Colorado graduate student, was formally charged on Monday in the shooting deaths of 12 people in the shootings at an Aurora, Colorado, theater on July 20.

Sixty-seven percent of those polled say that shootings like the one in Colorado are the isolated acts of troubled individuals. Twenty-four percent say such shootings reflect broader problems in U.S. society.

Hughes had bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition online. Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Representative Carolyn McCarthy of New York said they were proposing limits on anonymous online or mail-order purchases of ammunition.

The legislation also would require reporting of bulk ammunition sales.

President Barack Obama pledged last week to work to "arrive at a consensus" on how to reduce gun violence.

The Pew survey was conducted July 26 to 29 among 1,010 adults.

Load Google Wallet onto Verizon's Galaxy S III with this new hack

A pair of smartphone enthusiasts have successfully loaded Google Wallet on a Samsung Galaxy S III from Verizon, the first ever to do so. Mike Beauchamp and Dustin Evans loaded the app onto the phone before visiting McDonalds to give it a test run, all on video of course.

The clip shows the app running on the phone and how it is used to pay for a breakfast sandwich at the fast food chain during a recent trip to Kansas City to check out Google Fiber. The video doesn?t specifically reveal how to get the app onto the phone but XDA forums have documented the process and since its posting, Evans has also published a guide on his Google+ account.

Essentially you will need to root your phone and know a good bit about code and editing. There?s a zip that?s available for download that includes a tweaked Google Wallet app that needs uploading as well.

Google Wallet doesn?t come as a native app on the Verizon version of the Galaxy S II because the carrier is working on their own mobile payment system called Isis. The project, announced in November 2010, is a joint venture between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon that also uses NFC technology much like Google Wallet. The project is said to begin trials in Salt Lake City and Austin this summer.

If you can?t wait for Verizon?s own app or until they ink a licensing deal with the search giant, this new hack will allow you to get into the mobile payment scene right now.

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides: Surface-style keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides Surfacestyle keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony's next-generation tablet appears to have leaked on internal slides spotted by German news site, Mobiflip. In short, it's thinner and lighter than the Tablet S, while internal specifications also trump it, including a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0 ("or later"), 3G connectivity and three storage options; 16, 32 and 64GB. The whole tablet follows the same folded magazine design of Sony's existing tablet, is splashproof and houses a 6,000mAh battery that the slides suggest will manage 10 hours of WiFi-based web browsing. There's even some tentative pricing, with the different-sized models marked up at $450, $550 and $650, respectively. The pictures also cover Sony's plans to add a lightweight keyboard to its next tablet, similar to Microsoft's Surface plans, but with some Smart Cover-esque kickstand skills thrown in for good measure. We've added a shot of the keyboard cover after the break, but you can take a tour of the rest of the slides -- which include a raft of accessories and docks -- at the source link below.

Update: We've been in touch with a Sony spokesperson, who had "no comment at this stage." We may have to wait until next month, when European trade show IFA kicks off -- with Sony in attendance -- until we hear anything more concrete.

4 steps needed now to remedy innovation deficit: US commerce ...

Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank sounded the alarm at the lagging innovation seen within the United States, citing evidence that R&D spending and initiatives have sunk to the lowest levels in decades.

Speaking at the Third Annual Innovation Luncheon of the Global Women?s Innovation Network, Blank first gave the bad news: ?The current federal share of research spending is half what it was in the Eisenhower administration,? and, today, ?America ranks 14th in the world in terms of the percentage of college graduates we produce. We used to be number one.?? As if that wasn?t enough, ?The World Economic Forum now ranks our infrastructure 24th. We used to be in the top 10.?

However, this can be turned around. ?The good news is that none of these trends is inevitable or unchangeable,? Blank said. ?There are clear policy avenues that we can take to reverse the trendlines.?

Here are her recommendations, reported by Julie Anixter in Innovation Excellence:

Invest more federal dollars in basic research: ?The Internet, satellite communications, semi-conductors and other job-generating advances would not have been possible without the wise investment of taxpayer dollars. Unfortunately, since 1980, federal funding for basic research has dropped from 70 percent of all basic research funding to just 57 percent?. The fact is, governments around the world are increasing their public support at universities and research institutions. So must we.?

Support the transfer of new technologies to help increase productivity, especially in areas such as manufacturing: ?Production and innovation are inextricably linked. Innovation is an iterative process, where ideas are tested in production, and those lessons feed back into new innovation. Manufacturing R&D is also the dominant source of innovative technologies that are adopted into the service sector. The government has played an active role in this space. For instance, for nearly 25 Years, our Manufacturing Extension Partnership?MEP?has funded centers around the country that consult with private sector companies facing technological problems. MEP puts them in touch with scientists and engineers who can help solve those problems. The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership launched last summer is another important model to help advance tech transfer. This public-private partnership uses the convening power of the government to bring together top research universities with top U.S. manufacturers?. Clearly, there is a role for universities, government, and the private sector to collaborate and make the connections that lead to the transfer of technologies from lab to marketplace.?

Ensure that the intellectual property protection system remains strong: ?Patents are a critical tool to help commercialize game-changing ideas. They?re the fuel for innovation. The Department of Commerce recently released a report on the role of IP in the economy. It shows that nearly 35 percent of our GDP?more than $5 trillion?comes from what we call ?IP-intensive industries.? These industries support about 40 million jobs. The report also made clear that IP protections have a ripple effect in the market. The landmark America Invents Act is playing a crucial role in helping us build a 21st century IP system?.? And I should note that we?re already making great progress to create a more efficient patent system. For example, while patent filing in 2011 grew by 5 percent, our patent backlog actually dropped by about 10 percent.?

Increase the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates: ?As you know, these fields produce many of the inventors and leaders who bring new ideas from the lab to the marketplace. We need these people now more than ever?. In recent years, however, only about 13 percent of U.S. college graduates got degrees in the STEM fields. That is much lower than in many of our competitor countries like Korea and Germany where 25 percent of their students receive STEM degrees.?

Mindreading hormone? A better judge of character with nasal spray?

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Ingesting the hormone oxytocin via nasal spray improves the ability to read people's facial expressions. These findings hold great promise for treatment of mental health disorders and drug addiction.

In other contexts, oxytocin is already well-known as the "bliss hormone." The hormone is secreted upon stimulation by touch and is known to result in a feeling of calm and physical relaxation. It is also used to induce labour in childbirth and as an aid for women experiencing difficulties in breastfeeding.

Oxytocin has also been referred to as a "mindreading" hormone. Recent research findings show that there may be some truth to these claims -- although the mindreading component may have a more down-to-earth explanation.

Angry people seemed angrier

As part of a research project carried out by Siri Leknes, a research fellow at the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo, 40 healthy students were administered nasal spray containing a dose of either saltwater or oxytocin. They were subsequently shown photographs of faces displaying angry, happy or neutral expressions. Some of the photos showed individuals displaying more "hidden" emotional expressions which tend to be picked up at a more subconscious level.

"We found that oxytocin intensified test subjects' awareness of the emotions present in the photos. Faces expressing anger stood out as angrier and less happy, and correspondingly, faces expressing happiness were happier," explains Dr Leknes.

"We know that people express feelings in other ways than through facial expression alone, for example, by means of body language and vocalisation. We presume that our findings also apply for these modes of expression," she adds.

The study receives funding under the Research Council of Norway's Alcohol and Drug Research Programme (RUSMIDDEL).

Greatest effect on those who need it the most

There were two rounds to the experiment to ensure that all student subjects were tested using both salt water and oxytocin -- without letting them know which dose they would be receiving each time.

"It turns out that those with the lowest aptitude for judging emotional expression properly -- that is, those with the poorest scores during the saltwater round -- were the ones who showed the greatest improvement using oxytocin. This is really fascinating; the people who need it the most are thus the ones who get the most out of using the hormone," Dr Leknes points out.

Based on previous research along with her own findings, Dr Leknes believes in oxytocin's potential as a supplementary treatment for people suffering from mental health disorders or drug-dependency. In fact, nearly all mental health disorders involve a diminished ability to recognise the feelings of others. The same applies for drug abusers.

"Oxytocin will not be a cure-all for mental illness or drug addiction, but it may be of use as a supplementary treatment. It may make individuals better equipped to interpret the signals of others around them, which may improve how they function in social settings," Dr Leknes explains.

Testing for treatment of drug abuse up next

Oxytocin nasal spray is available via prescription and is relatively safe when used as directed. Side effects are extremely rare. According to Dr Leknes, doctors are already allowed to prescribe oxytocin for the treatment of various problems associated with social functionality such as autism.

"In such cases, however, it's a matter of isolated treatments which are not evaluated as a whole. It is important that we research this to gain greater insight into the effect," she points out.

Siri Leknes and her colleagues are now hoping to take their efforts a step further and examine how well oxytocin works as a supplementary treatment for drug abusers.

"If it turns out that our assumptions are correct, then we may be able to come up with a simple treatment that would mean a great deal for people who find it difficult to pick up on the social cues of their peers," says Dr Leknes.

Motherhood and Work HR, Recruiting, Social Media Policies ...

?

Many years ago I found out I was to be a mother ? 26 years ago, to be exact. ?I was nervous but this had been something I had always wanted. ?Being a 23-year old, I thought I was prepared for this new job, my next endeavor. After all, I had several younger siblings who I babysat often and I starting earning a paycheck at twelve, I took in ironing ? so I was familiar with the notion of work.

I figured Motherhood was just another step in my life progression.

I never even thought about my work or that I should give up on, ultimately, a lifetime of work?outside of my home. ?I assumed motherhood would coincide nicely with my desire to continue to develop as an adult ? my personal growth as a human ? my quest for the perfect career. ? Motherhood was something I could achieve as a wife, as a woman. ?Not something that would encompass my life. ?I never considered that it was my sole purpose as a woman. ?It was just a part of my ?life? package.

As I moved along in my pregnancy and my body changed ? I visited my doctor monthly and prepared myself and my home for this new little member of the family. ?I worked full-time as a dental assistant ?and took extreme caution when I snapped dental x-rays or when I was exposed to alloys containing mercury. ? I worked a second job, too ? part-time for a friend who did custom embroidery and applique on bowling shirts and uniforms. ?Additionally, we created designer t-shirts and sweatshirts ? very big in the 80s. ?I learned how to applique and cleaned a significant amount of patterns. ?I worked at the dental office until two weeks before my due date and then increased my hours at my part-time gig until I was to be delivered.

One morning, I showed up to work about 10 minutes late. ?As I slowly climbed the stairs to the sewing room, I called out to my boss, ?I may not be able to stay very long today. I think I am in labor?? ?She appeared at the top of the stairs before I finished my ascent. ?Her eyes big and panting , ?What do you mean you think you are in labor? ?Why are you even here? Where is your husband?? The questions came fast and furious? ?I stayed and worked for about an hour, called the OB GYN and my husband and then my boss/friend happily drove me to the hospital ? just under 50 years old, she had never had children and was excited to be a part of it all. ?6 hours after checking into Labor & Delivery, my first baby girl, Nicole Marie, was born weighing in at a whopping 6 lbs 7 ozs. ? Never once during those very long months and the ensuing labor and pushes, did I ever consider that I would no longer be able to work outside of my home. ?As a matter of fact, the births of my children actually fueled the fires of my desire to excel and learn as much as I could. ?After each delivery, I was back to work within two weeks.

I thought we had progressed.

I am dumbfounded by the reaction and response to Marissa Mayer?s New Job / New Baby announcement. ?Especially given her industry, her background, her wealth, and her obvious prowess and brains. ?If someone had said to me, ?You can?t work and also be a mother,? I probably would have cocked my head slightly to the right and asked ?What??? while my fists were clenching.
I love being a mother.
I love working.
Why should I select one over the other? ?Why do I have to? ?Maybe I didn?t make the best choices throughout my life, but I always loved my children and made sure they had food on the table & shoes on their feet. ?And so far, they are all four contributing members to society and generally happy, well-adjusted individuals, the youngest being 15, the oldest at 25. And I gave my all to each job I held, devoted and loyal.

I hope we have progressed.

Why has the media jumped on this? ?Ms. Mayer works ? she works hard. ?She is 37-years old and has progressed to a fantastic place in her life and career. ?She isn?t on government aid, she knows who the father is, and she will have help, should she need it. ?Why is there a desire, today, to even raise a question of her ability and why is it anyone?s business?

I guess we haven?t progressed.

In a day and age when 65% of all college graduates are women (Yay!) but 1 in 7 Working-Age Adults are on food stamps, is this type of media frenzy necessary? ?Can Ms. Mayer be a Mom and?Work?? ?Shouldn?t the media concern itself with continued high unemployment rates and the fact that graduating students either can?t get jobs or are underemployed?

This isn?t the good old boys network anymore. ?The number of female CEOs in on the rise and given the college graduate numbers, it will continue to rise. ?Imagine what the CEO ratio will be in 10 years. If this is responsible reporting and questioning, I abhor the media ? and I am part of it, considering my role in small business and the amount of online writing I contribute for my industry?

I wish only the best for Marissa Mayer, knowing she will succeed just like the millions of other working moms out there, like myself, who rush to get their kids to daycare or school, before they step into their places of employment or home offices. ?Grow up, American Media. ?Working Moms already have.

(AP) ? Only an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny number of bikini-wearers turned out to strut their stuff in a southern Minnesota town.

Organizers had hoped for hundreds of women to march Saturday in what was billed as the World's Largest Bikini Parade.

But the number of bikini-wearing women ? and a couple of men in bikini tops ? at the Paddlefish Days Parade in Madison Lake fell far short of the world record.

The (Mankato, Minn.) Free Press (http://bit.ly/Mrt1N4 ) reported Saturday the number appeared to be 39. Women were told they could wear shorts over their bikini bottoms once it was clear the record of 451 was unattainable.

A majority of City Council members opposed the bikini parade. Some said it was inconsistent with the festival's family-oriented nature.

Inevitable. There is no place in the world where this works, and there is certainly no place in the west for this racket. We have the best banking system in the world. Islamic banking is as retarded as Islam itself.

Colorectal cancer on the rise among younger people

Carol Carr showed all the signs of colorectal cancer seven years ago, but doctors thought the 44-year-old Glen Burnie woman was too young to have the disease and never tested her for it.

Instead, they said her diarrhea, vomiting, cramping, iron deficiency and extreme fatigue were more likely caused by the flu, anxiety and even a brain disorder.

Treatments for those illnesses failed and Carr got so sick she had to stop working. When she finally saw a specialist who ordered a colonoscopy she was suffering from Stage II colorectal cancer. The test found a mass that blocked most of her colon and had grown through her intestinal wall.

Misdiagnoses like Carr's are becoming more common as a disease historically associated with people older than 50 is increasingly affecting a younger population.

While overall rates of colorectal cancer have been dropping since the 1980s, cases in people under age 50 have been slowly, but steadily rising, research has found. The biggest increases come among people in their 40s.

Overall rates have been declining by about 3 percent per year in men and by 2.3 percent per year in women, according to the American Cancer Society. But colorectal cancer rates in people ages 18 to 49 increased 2.1 percent between 1998 and 2007.

While younger patients still make up a sliver of people who get the cancer, researchers and scientists are paying more attention before the problem worsens. It was a topic of discussion at a conference last week for the Colon Cancer Alliance in Baltimore.

Dr. Y. Nancy You, a surgical oncologist from Texas who spoke at the conference, said that most research on colorectal cancer skews toward older people. More wide-scale research on younger people needs to be done to better understand the new patterns of the disease, she said.

"It's hard to know whether the current research is really applicable to the younger population," she said.

Nobody really knows why the cancer is increasing in younger people.

Doctors believe lifestyle ? including bad eating habits, lack of exercise and obesity ? is part of the problem. Some of the answer probably also lies in genetics and environmental factors, doctors said.

Better screening and testing have helped over time to curb the disease, which is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. Doctors are able to detect and remove polyps, sac-like growths on the colon wall, before they develop into cancer.

But guidelines generally call for screening people older than 50 and suggest younger people get tested only if they are showing signs of cancer and have a family history.

Even when younger patients have signs such as anemia and digestive complaints, doctors are more likely to attribute that to a medical problem other than cancer. Patients themselves may also wait to see a doctor because they might not connect the symptoms to cancer.

"I flip-flopped from doctor to doctor and tried treatment after treatment that would work for six months and then stop," said Eden Stotsky-Himelfarb, a nurse with the gastrointestinal surgical group at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer at age 26, but believes she was misdiagnosed for eight years. Stotsky-Himelfarb said she had a family history of cancer, including a grandfather who had colon cancer, that should have alerted doctors.

Carr is now 51 and cancer-free, but she remembers the frustration of being misdiagnosed. The sales engineer had three-fourths of her colon removed. Like many colorectal cancer survivors, she still deals with bowel problems. She said doctors need to be more aware of the symptoms of the disease and patients should be more proactive as well.

"If patients are showing symptoms, they need to be tested no matter their age," she said.

When it is finally diagnosed, the cancer in younger patients has usually progressed to a more advanced stage, making it more complicated and costly to treat, doctors said.

Dr. Laura Porter was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at age 43 after experiencing several misdiagnoses. Training to become a doctor at the time, she was forced to drop out of her pediatric residency program after becoming sick. She would suffer two additional reoccurrences after her initial treatment.

She said the cancer changed her life, including sidelining her career. All the treatments, which included chemotherapy, deteriorated her body and affected her memory. She still has sensitivity in her fingers.
