Mexican poet and activist Javier Sicilia will bring his peace caravan to Chicago Sunday through Tuesday.
Sicilia has visited Chicago before. But this visit is part of a month-long? U.S. tour that kicked off Aug. 12 in San Diego and will end in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 12.
Sicilia's son was killed last year in the Mexican drug war and he has refocused his life on calling for peace in Mexico. But he also emphasizes that the drug war is fueled by U.S. consumption of drugs and the illegal export of guns from the United States to Mexico.
"This war begins here, in your consumption of drugs, in your legalization of weapons," Sicilia said during a visit to the University of Illinois at Chicago in April.
He also will be joined by other parents and individuals from Mexico who will speak about the impact of the drug war.
There will be several different events in Chicago. On Sunday at 6 p.m. there will be mass and reception at St. Pius Catholic Church, 1919 S. Ashland.
On Monday at 1 p.m. there will be a luncheon and community dialogue at the National Museum of Mexican Art,? 1852 W. 19th St. Then Monday at 5 p.m. the peace march will start in Little Village at the arches and continue to New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church at 4301 W. Washington Blvd.
On Tuesday afternoon there will be forums at 2 p.m Roosevelt University and at 3 p.m. at Northeastern Illinois University. To conclude, there will be a community meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the Albany Park Autonomous Center, 3460 W. Lawrence Ave.
